Train service remained suspended for the second successive day on Thursday due to heavy to very heavy snowfall during the last 24 hours in Kashmir valley.
''The train service will remain suspended today as well, as the tracks, particularly in south Kashmir, are under several feet of snow,'' a railway official told this morning.
He said one of the snow cutters is under repair and can be used to clear the tracks only after it is fixed. ''On top of that, it is still snowing in Anantnag making snow clearance operation on tracks difficult,'' he said.
He said, therefore, no train will chug on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir and Banihal in Jammu region track.
Similarly, he said train service on Srinagar-Badgam-Baramulla in north Kashmir will remain suspended on Thursday as the tracks are under several feet of snow.
He said train service will be resumed once snow stops and tracks are cleared of snow.
This is the second time this week that the service has been suspended due to snowfall. Train service on Baramulla in north Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region was suspended on Monday following heavy snowfall. The service on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal, was resumed early on Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, trains were allowed to chug on Srinagar-Badgam-Baramulla in north Kashmir, on Tuesday afternoon after three to four feet of snow was cleared from the tracks.
Train service has become very popular in the valley as it is economical, fast and safe against other mode of transport available. After August 5, when the Centre scrapped Article 370 and divided the state into two Union Territories (UTs), train service was suspended for more than three months for security reasons.
